We condemn and denounce the continued disrespect, degradation and dehumanization of Black women in our public discourse.

Political disagreement is part of democracy. Racism, misogyny and personal degradation are not.

As a father of a Black daughter, as a pastor, and as a man who believes we have a responsibility to protect the dignity of others, I will not stand silently while Black women are repeatedly attacked, demeaned or treated as political punching bags.

You can disagree with a Black woman’s politics.

You can debate her policies.

You can challenge her record.

But you do not get to strip away her dignity because she is a Black woman who has the courage to speak, lead and serve for those who are marginalized.

I will fight to protect and defend the dignity of all people. But we must also have the courage to say clearly what we are witnessing: Black women have endured a particular level of disrespect in American public life for far too long.

They are our mothers.

Our daughters.

Our wives.

Our sisters.

Our leaders.

And they deserve the same dignity and respect we demand for everyone else.

Whether the target is Representative Angie Nixon or any other Black woman stepping forward to serve her community, my position is clear:

BLACK WOMEN ARE NOT POLITICAL PUNCHING BAGS.

DISRESPECT OF BLACK WOMEN WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

We can disagree without degrading one another.

That is the standard of leadership I believe America deserves.
